Chase Stokes opened up about how he’s supporting girlfriend Kelsea Ballerini after finding out her dog, Dibs, has inoperable cancer in his heart.

Stokes said in a recently-published interview with PEOPLE that he and Ballerini are “just taking it day by day now,” following Dibs’ diagnosis. “I mean, it's one of those things that when it happens as fast as it does, you just try to do the next right thing.”

Ballerini announced late last month in a statement on her Instagram story that “Dibby has inoperable cancer in his heart. He’s not in pain, and luckily it hasn’t spread further. We’re going to start him on the ‘big’ meds to try to make sure he can have as many comfortable and happy days (weeks, months 🙏) left as possible. The doctors have been amazing, my mom is here (he stans grandma), and Chase is the greatest dog dad in the world. He is getting extra cuddles and kibbles from his little family.”

Ballerini said it’s been “a complex and emotional time.” Soon after opening up about Dibs’ cancer, Ballerini made another announcement with a video that had become particularly “emotional and sentimental.” The country star revealed details about her album release show at Madison Square Garden in New York City to mark the release of her highly-anticipated new studio album, Patterns, set to release on October 25. The video featured Dibs, and was filmed just a few weeks before Ballerini learned about his cancer. Ballerini said when she shared the video about the album release show — which quickly sold out — that Dibs “sure did love getting to frolick around NYC and put his happy spirit into MSG to get it ready for us all. 🤍”
