A concertgoer asked Kelsea Ballerini to sign his divorce decree during the singer-songwriter’s headlining show over the weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ballerini divorced fellow country artist Morgan Evans in 2022 after nearly five years of marriage. She shared her story of heartbreak and the start of her healing journey with her deeply personal EP and short film, Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, which she released as a surprise on Valentine’s Day in 2023. Ballerini spotted a sign in the Salt Lake City crowd referencing RUTWM: “Will you help finish rolling up my welcome mat and sign my divorce decree??”

“You got me through my divorce,” the fan told Ballerini, calling it “two of the sh***iest years of my life.”

Ballerini sat on stage with the decree, a court-issued document officially marking the end of a marriage. Ultimately, she declined to sign the decree in the space the fan outlined for her because she “I don’t understand legal things,” and “because I, respectfully, I’m really excited to stop being a poster child for divorce.” Still, she appeared to flip the decree over and sign the back of it in the video shared by fan account Kelsea Central (warning: language).

The Patterns star recently said at another concert that “we have to stop” shouting profanity about her ex-husband. At least one concertgoer apparently yelled “f*** you, Morgan” after a lyric in one of Ballerini’s Rolling Up The Welcome Mat ballads, and Ballerini assured the crowd: “Seriously. We’re three years past it. Everything’s fine now. I sing this song for you now. It’s not about me anymore. Please. Please. Alright. For everyone that’s moving forward with their life, will you sing this with me?” Ballerini has since moved forward with actor Chase Stokes. The couple celebrated their two-year anniversary earlier this year.

Ballerini — who was “absolutely speechless” over her Entertainer of the Year nod and other nominations at the 60th Academy of Country Music Awards — is on her first headlining arena tour with special guests Sasha Alex SloanAsheThe Japanese House and MaRynn TaylorSee the list of tour stops here.
