Black Panther: Wakanda Forever makes you forget everything you know about the genre. On the surface it’s a superhero movie but at its core it’s a story about grief and vengeance. It’s the most emotional, well-rounded and character driven Marvel movie to date.
The film picks up right at the passing of T'challa leaving Wakanda to mourn the death of their king. At the same time they must now fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers who are still after their vibranium. The plot echoes the real life passing of actor Chadwick Boseman who died in 2020.
The movie also introduces the villain Namor and his blue-skinned, water-breathing people who also pose a threat to Wakanda. Namor is the best villain since Thanos. A force to be reckoned with that will keep you eyes glued to the screen anytime he appears. Personally, I loved the hispanic representation in this film and loved seeing a villain played by a Mexican actor.
The tributes to Chadwick Boseman packed a punch. The movie had time to breathe and even live in the silence to pay tribute. You can tell a weight was felt by the entire cast while filming this movie and channeled through their performances. Everyone stepped up their roles in this sequel. From Angela Bassett as Queen Ramonda to Winston Duke as M'Baku. It’s one of the best casts in a non-avengers Marvel movie.
I’ll admit, at 2 hours and 41 minutes…the runtime becomes apparent midway through the movie. Could they have cut some time down? Yes, of course. But this movie is all about character development and the journey that Wakanda faces in this transitional period. I think of the film. The runtime is warranted to keep this story from feeling rushed.
It’s an investment but one worthy of the time as the best film to close out Phase 4 of the MCU. It’s the only perfect movie of the year. I give it 5 out of 5 vibranium suits.
