COVID-19 has had a huge impact on so many industries and the over all economy, but while over all alcohol sales have been up, champagne is down. The theory is that there hasn't been much to celebrate with a champagne toast since weddings, graduations, and other such parties have been largely cancelled. The Champagne Committee (which I also just learned is a thing) says that about 16,000 winemakers "are experiencing a crisis...to be even worse than the Great Depression." This is leading to large quantities of grapes being sold to distilleries at discounted prices or even being destroyed.
