Well, it should come as no surprise that Merriam-Webster's word of the year in 2020 has something to do with COVID19. They crowned "pandemic" as the top word, since it spiked more than 115,000 percent in searches, and taught people who didn't already know the difference between it and an "epidemic." Following the dictionary editors formulas that measure the number of look-ups with current events to determine every year's list of words. The other top searched words for this year were:
